General Anesthesia Dentistry in Springfield, IL

General anesthesia places you fully asleep for dental treatment, provided on site by an independent anesthesia team. At Makeover Dental in Springfield, IL, it is available for selected cases such as full mouth reconstruction and multiple dental implants, based on the procedure and your individual circumstances. Call (217) 522-1111.

What Is General Anesthesia in Dentistry?

General anesthesia renders you completely unconscious for the duration of treatment. You will not be aware of the procedure, will not respond to instruction and will have no memory of it afterwards.

It differs from IV conscious sedation, where you remain semi-awake, breathe unaided and can respond to verbal prompts. Both have their place, the right choice depends on the treatment, your medical history and your level of anxiety.

Who Administers It?

General anesthesia is administered by a licensed anesthesia team dedicated exclusively to your safety, monitoring, and anesthesia throughout the procedure.

IV conscious sedation may be administered by Dr. Mosquera for shorter procedures, or by a licensed CRNA for longer procedures. When an anesthesia professional is involved, they focus entirely on your sedation, medications, airway, and vital signs while Dr. Mosquera focuses on your dental treatment.

This separation allows each team to stay focused on its role throughout your procedure.

When Is General Anesthesia Recommended?

  • Lengthy or complex treatment. Full-arch implant cases, full mouth reconstruction, multiple extractions with grafting
  • Severe dental anxiety or phobia where conscious sedation is not sufficient
  • A strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Difficulty achieving profound local anesthesia
  • Special healthcare needs or conditions making it hard to remain still
  • Patients who prefer to have everything completed in one visit

Everything Under One Roof

For appropriately selected patients, we offer general anesthesia in an outpatient setting at our Springfield office.

For Teeth in Just One Day, eligible patients may complete extractions, implant placement, and delivery of a fixed provisional bridge in one visit while under general anesthesia.

Is General Anesthesia Safe?

Modern dental anesthesia has an excellent safety record when delivered by qualified professionals with proper monitoring.

Your suitability is assessed beforehand. We review your full medical history, current medications, allergies and any previous experience with anesthesia. Some medical conditions require clearance from your physician first and where general anesthesia is not appropriate we say so and discuss alternatives.

What to Expect

Before. You will be asked not to eat or drink for a set period beforehand and you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterwards.

During. Anesthesia is induced through an IV line. You will fall asleep within moments and remain monitored throughout.

After. You wake in our recovery area and remain there until the anesthesia team is satisfied that you are stable. Grogginess for the rest of the day is normal. Plan to rest, avoid driving or making important decisions for 24 hours and follow the written aftercare instructions we provide.

Which Option Is Right for You?

We offer oral sedation and IV conscious sedation as well as general anesthesia for selected cases, so the recommendation is based on your treatment and your circumstances rather than on what happens to be available. Makeover Dental does not offer nitrous oxide.
